Under Jim’s leadership since 1993, The Hechtman Group Ltd (THG) has become a successful growth-oriented firm specializing in CPA Services and business guidance for small businesses. Jim focuses on key development priorities for the firm including: (1) strategic plans, particularly PRISM CFO/Controller Services, (2) long-term trusted-advisor client and business partner relationships and, (3) effective staff development to steadily increase skill and talent within an entrepreneurial culture.

Jim is a hands-on executive who enjoys working closely with key clients to develop comprehensive growth plans and outsourced financial guidance.  He provides consulting services that speed progress for start-ups as well as providing on-going support for effective operations and planning. He helps business owners meet their multi-faceted needs.  Jim also provides guidance acting as the client’s Chief Financial Officer. He brings extensive experience in all types of taxation of limited liability companies, corporations, partnerships, individuals and fiduciaries to bear on his client’s behalf.

Prior to The Hechtman Group Ltd, Jim served in the tax department of a national public accounting firm for several years. Jim graduated from the University of Michigan in 1991. His professional associations include the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA), the Illinois CPA Society, The International Council of Shopping Centers, the Home Builders Association of Greater Chicago, the Lincoln Park Builder Association and the Northbrook Chamber of Commerce.

Jim, his wife and two sons live in Chicago’s northern suburbs.  He is a confessed golf addict striving for a consistent score. From October through March, he can be found on the basketball court practicing what he calls his own version of psychotherapy.

What do you like best about your business?
Being part of a client’s leadership team and helping them achieve sustained business growth and personal financial goals. The heartfelt thank you that comes from doing something that adds value. 

What wisdom have you learned “on the job” that you don’t get from higher education? 
We can make a difference in the future success of businesses and individuals instead of just reporting on the past. Our job is not just about good compliance work, which dominates the perception of our industry, rather it is about helping people think about bigger business problems. It is about advising them on steadily doing the right things that ensure success overtime.

What would you tell a young person just starting out in your profession today?
What you learn in school is just a foundation to build on – it’s general knowledge. Applying that knowledge to clients in ways that are most effective, that help them build a better future, that’s what makes you successful.  However, you have to master that foundation of knowledge before you build on to it by thinking about bigger issues.

What three words best describe you, personally and professionally?
Patient.  Problem solver. Perfectionist.

What are your “words to live by”? 
Progress is progress no matter how small. Life is a marathon, not a sprint. Have a plan and hold yourself accountable or find someone who can do it for you.
